Syllabus of Indian Postal Service (IPoS)

The syllabus for the Indian Postal Service (IPoS) examination is the same as that for the Civil Services Examination conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). The examination is conducted in three stages:

  1. Preliminary Examination:

    • General Studies Paper I: Current events of national and international importance, history of India, Indian and World Geography, Indian Polity and Governance, Economic and Social Development, Environmental Ecology, and General Science.
    • General Studies Paper II (CSAT): Comprehension, Interpersonal skills, Logical reasoning, Analytical ability, Decision-making, General mental ability, Basic numeracy, and Data interpretation.

  2. Main Examination:

    • Compulsory Papers: Essay, General Studies I-IV (covering Indian heritage and culture, governance, constitution, social justice, international relations, technology, economic development, environment, security, and ethics).
    • Optional Paper: Candidates can choose one optional subject from the list provided by UPSC.

  3. Interview/Personality Test:

    • Assessment of personality, communication skills, leadership qualities, decision-making ability, and general awareness.

Exam Pattern of Indian Postal Service (IPoS)

The IPoS selection process is part of the Civil Services Examination conducted by UPSC, which follows this pattern:

  1. Preliminary Examination:

    • Objective-type questions with multiple choices.
    • Two papers: General Studies Paper I and General Studies Paper II (CSAT).
    • Marks obtained in the Preliminary exam are not counted in the final ranking but are used to qualify for the Main Examination.

  2. Main Examination:

    • Descriptive type papers.
    • Nine papers in total: Two qualifying papers, four General Studies papers, one Essay paper, and two papers on the optional subject.
    • Marks obtained in the Main Examination and the Interview determine the final ranking.

  3. Interview/Personality Test:

    • Conducted by a panel of experts to assess the candidate’s personality, suitability for the service, and general awareness.
    • The interview carries 275 marks.
