The UPSC Civil Services Examination is divided into three stages
- Preliminary Examination (Prelims): The Preliminary Examination consists of two papers:
a) General Studies Paper I:
- Current events of national and international importance
- History of India and the Indian National Movement
- Indian and World Geography
- Indian Polity and Governance
- Economic and Social Development
- Environmental Ecology, Biodiversity, and Climate Change
- General Science
b) General Studies Paper II (CSAT – Civil Services Aptitude Test):
- Comprehension
- Interpersonal skills, including communication skills
- Logical reasoning and analytical ability
- Decision-making and problem-solving
- General mental ability
- Basic numeracy (numbers and their relations, orders of magnitude, etc.)
- Main Examination (Mains): The Main Examination consists of nine papers, out of which two papers are qualifying in nature (i.e., marks obtained in these papers are not counted for ranking). The remaining seven papers are counted for ranking. The papers are as follows:

3. Personality Test (Interview): Candidates who qualify the Mains examination are called for an interview (personality test). The interview assesses the candidate’s personality, leadership qualities, communication skills, and overall suitability for the civil services.
Optional Subjects: Candidates can choose one optional subject from a list of available subjects, which include but are not limited to subjects like History, Geography, Public Administration, Sociology, Political Science, Economics, Psychology, and more. The optional subject has two papers in the Main Examination.
